Welcome To Our Website

The mission of Extraordinary Dogs Inc. is to provide rescued “death row” dogs with the skills and training to help them become extraordinary canine friends for life to their adopted family.  We are a 501(c)(3) training and enrichment facility that focuses on the emotional intelligence and resilience of  all dogs, especially those who have been discarded.  We work exclusively with dogs rescued from high-kill facilities.

Sky's The Limit

“Every dog is extraordinary.  It only takes a wise and loving human to acknowledge and nurture this.”  —OHK

Dogs of Service

An important and critical component of our mission is to educate the public about canine ethology and emotional intelligence by showcasing the unique inherent talents of these dogs that we discover and nurture through our individualized training and enrichment  program.

All of our resident dogs are the survivors of high kill animal control facilities.  Unlike some service dog organization who breed and/or select very young puppies for their programs, we have proven that most shelter dogs are excellent candidates for service and therapy when trained with our methodology.

Each dog has a customized training plan that incorporates emotional intelligence (canine and human) and uses enrichment tools to increase resilience.  Our detailed “matching” program with follow-up training  guarantees successful placement . . . our adoption/placement success rate remains at 100% .

Education and Research

Our long-term focus is education of dog owners and the public.  Our staff studies and works with other ethologists and research organizations to improve canine teaching methodology and educate dog owners and the public about canine behavior and emotional health.

Canine Good Citizen

Before our dogs are certified for therapy or service, they must successfully pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen program.  We work with the AKC certified evaluator from K9 Mind and Heart LLC.

"Lucia's Playground"

Our successful and innovative training program centers around enrichment activities, play therapy, and relationship building.  Lucia’s Playground is our enrichment center, and is named after precious Lucia, the heart and soul of our organization.

Service and Therapy Dogs

It takes a minimum of 2 years of targeted training for a fully-trained service dog and a little less for therapy/ESA.  If you have special needs and require either assistance with the training of your own dog, or are interested in one of our candidates, contact us for help.

We invite you to join us on this incredible journey!

All of our resident dogs are “death row” survivors, and are in training for different jobs and various levels of service.  We have a bi-monthly “crowdfunder” to keep our dog food pantry well stocked.  Much thought and research went into our selection of dog food and our monthly bill is $1200 -$1500.  We would be so grateful if you would consider participating in a monthly giving program.  All donations are appreciated and are tax deductible.

“Every dog is extraordinary.  It only takes a wise and open heart to see it.”

Teaching vs Training

We teach our dogs by helping them to develop and use cognitive skills.  Our methods are based on the emotional intelligence and health of each dog.  All of our placements and adoptions include coaching sessions for each dog/owner team.

Annie’s Journey

Her eyes were so captivating and she always waited patiently by the door until I came to feed her. As it turned out, there was no rescue waiting for her or they backed out, so Annie had nowhere to go. Several people contacted some of the rescues to see if there was any interest in her. . .

Kitties in a Box

I arrived there to pick up a mama cat with newborn kittens and deliver them to Dr. Becky. While I was there, Sandy pointed out some of her “favorite” and/or most at risk dogs, as she always does. We tagged some of them for pulling the following week and then went to the “cat room”.

Graceful Determination

He had been covered in ticks so he had been a stray for quite awhile. The fact that someone didn’t love enough to look for him when he disappeared always grips my heart. His eyes are soft and liquid as he quietly returns your gaze. He leans casually against the gate while you talk to him and you can almost. . .

Life Without Blessings

Maybe for just a day, a “magic wand” could swish away every dog on the planet. What would it be like to live in a world without a single dog? Maybe if we could imagine that, there would be no need for a shelter system. The human species spent 3000 years cultivating the “perfect partner” and now they are simply taken for granted, ignored and tossed away like a worthless commodity. How many would notice or care that they were gone? How different would our lives be for just that one day?

Decisive Moments

As I started the engine, my thoughts went back to cage 3. What if no one came along and pulled/adopted him because he just appeared too “ordinary?” What if no one took the time to see the joy and love in this little dog’s eyes and he was dragged to the “death room?”

Falling in Love with Kiki

I don’t know how to love just a little. All my life it’s always been all or nothing, be it man or beast. So, it’s quite easy for me to fall in love with the dogs that come into my life as part of this “death row” dog mission, and it doesn’t take long. It’s a bittersweet moment when I hand them over to their “new” home. For me to turn my back on these dogs is not an option, despite the pain of letting go.
